Years ago I was a regular con-goer. I attended six Worldcons, one NASFiC and supported the KC in 2K and KC in 2006 bids. KC did not win those times.
I dropped out of the SF convention scene for many years.
Yesterday I checked the list of recent Worldcons, only to discover

Kansas City has won to host 2016, 40 years after the first KC Worldcon.
I'm psyched.
Sometimes writing, sometimes knitting, playing music once in a while. Working too much and reading too little.

Southland
I started watching Southland in 2009, when it premiered on NBC. It was canceled soon after and found a new home on TNT, where it ran for four more seasons. I didn't have TNT for that full run, however, and my ability to watch it from season three onward has been through Netflix, where I just started receiving the fifth and final season. I'm about halfway through watching it.
As I near the end of the show, I find myself feeling some reluctance to finish it, as I don't really want it to end. To me it seems to be a logical next generation of what Adam-12 was, a portrayal of at least some of the gritty reality of police work, along with showing both the good and bad of Los Angeles. I'll finish it anyway, as I want to see it through.
I'm glad that Me-TV is running most of the Jack Webb shows. I wish they had the rights to the original TV Dragnet, though. I'd like to see the black-and-white episodes that haven't been released on disc.

Haphazardness
For most of my life, I've been a haphazard diarist.
I hope to change that. Big talk, I know.
Five years ago I took a little road trip, a motorized walkabout. I visited Wichita, Salina, Kansas City, Des Moines, Minneapolis. Originally I had planned to visit Chicago to attend a recording of Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, going so far as to purchase a ticket, but in the end, my desire to return home to my bride and my aversion to the freedom-quashing politics of Chicago led me to return home sooner than I had originally intended.
While driving between Salina and Kansas City, I saw signs for the Dwight D. Eisenhower childhood home and Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene. I detoured to see the grounds, but had arrived too early for the museum's opening. With a schedule to keep, a desire to reach Des Moines before dark, I lingered only long enough to shoot a few pictures. Earlier this month I returned.
On a short, targeted vacation this time, I visited the Truman Museum and Library in Independence, Missouri, the Boulevard Brewing facility, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City and the Eisenhower Museum and Library in Abilene. Along the way I revisited pleasant, if not high-brow, culinary memories of Einstein Bagels on Shawnee Mission Parkway (K.C., KS), Papa Keno's pizzeria (Overland Park), Rudy's pizzeria (Lawrence), Sylas and Maddy's ice cream parlor (also in Lawrence), and Il Vicino (Wichita).
Perhaps later I'll post some photos.
